I had read in several articles, that one of the contributing factors for why women are paid less, is because they are less "comfortable" negotiating their salary, or initiating that conversation. I gave this a lot of thought and realized that I had been dodging direct conversations about compensation the entire time I have been in the workforce. Luck would have it, my Director approached me to let me know that they wanted to extend my contract. I told him that I was flattered that they wanted to keep me on, but if my contract were to be extended, that I would want to negotiate my salary. We had a discussion about what I was being paid now, and what I would want to be paid if they did extend my contract. Although it is conversation that needs to take place with other decision makers, I felt really good that the conversation was actually going to happen - and it otherwise may not have it I had not decided to bring it up.

Check back in, and I will report back with the results!
